I Sing the Body Electric ||

in Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman (1819–1892).

"....

2
The love of the body of man or woman balks account, the body itself balks account,
That of the male is perfect, and that of the female is perfect.

The expression of the face balks account,
But the expression of a well-made man appears not only in his face,
It is in his limbs and joints also, it is curiously in the joints of his hips and wrists,
It is in his walk, the carriage of his neck, the flex of his waist and knees, dress does not hide him,
The strong sweet quality he has strikes through the cotton and broadcloth,
To see him pass conveys as much as the best poem, perhaps more,
You linger to see his back, and the back of his neck and shoulder-side.

The sprawl and fulness of babes, the bosoms and heads of women, the folds of their dress, their style as we pass in the street, the contour of their shape downwards,
The swimmer naked in the swimming-bath, seen as he swims through the transparent green-shine, or lies with his face up and rolls silently to and fro in the heave of the water,
The bending forward and backward of rowers in row-boats, the horseman in his saddle,
Girls, mothers, house-keepers, in all their performances,
The group of laborers seated at noon-time with their open dinner-kettles, and their wives waiting,
The female soothing a child, the farmer’s daughter in the garden or cow-yard,
The young fellow hoeing corn, the sleigh-driver driving his six horses through the crowd,
The wrestle of wrestlers, two apprentice-boys, quite grown, lusty, good-natured, native-born, out on the vacant lot at sun-down after work,
The coats and caps thrown down, the embrace of love and resistance,
The upper-hold and under-hold, the hair rumpled over and blinding the eyes;
The march of firemen in their own costumes, the play of masculine muscle through clean-setting trowsers and waist-straps,
The slow return from the fire, the pause when the bell strikes suddenly again, and the listening on the alert,
The natural, perfect, varied attitudes, the bent head, the curv’d neck and the counting;
Such-like I love—I loosen myself, pass freely, am at the mother’s breast with the little child,
Swim with the swimmers, wrestle with wrestlers, march in line with the firemen, and pause, listen, count.

3
I knew a man, a common farmer, the father of five sons,
And in them the fathers of sons, and in them the fathers of sons.

This man was of wonderful vigor, calmness, beauty of person,
The shape of his head, the pale yellow and white of his hair and beard, the immeasurable meaning of his black eyes, the richness and breadth of his manners,
These I used to go and visit him to see, he was wise also,
He was six feet tall, he was over eighty years old, his sons were massive, clean, bearded, tan-faced, handsome,
They and his daughters loved him, all who saw him loved him,
They did not love him by allowance, they loved him with personal love,
He drank water only, the blood show’d like scarlet through the clear-brown skin of his face,
He was a frequent gunner and fisher, he sail’d his boat himself, he had a fine one presented to him by a ship-joiner, he had fowling-pieces presented to him by men that loved him,
When he went with his five sons and many grand-sons to hunt or fish, you would pick him out as the most beautiful and vigorous of the gang,
You would wish long and long to be with him, you would wish to sit by him in the boat that you and he might touch each other.

4
I have perceiv’d that to be with those I like is enough,
To stop in company with the rest at evening is enough,
To be surrounded by beautiful, curious, breathing, laughing flesh is enough,
To pass among them or touch any one, or rest my arm ever so lightly round his or her neck for a moment, what is this then?
I do not ask any more delight, I swim in it as in a sea.

There is something in staying close to men and women and looking on them, and in the contact and odor of them, that pleases the soul well,
All things please the soul, but these please the soul well.

5
This is the female form,
A divine nimbus exhales from it from head to foot,
It attracts with fierce undeniable attraction,
I am drawn by its breath as if I were no more than a helpless vapor, all falls aside but myself and it,
Books, art, religion, time, the visible and solid earth, and what was expected of heaven or fear’d of hell, are now consumed,
Mad filaments, ungovernable shoots play out of it, the response likewise ungovernable,
Hair, bosom, hips, bend of legs, negligent falling hands all diffused, mine too diffused,
Ebb stung by the flow and flow stung by the ebb, love-flesh swelling and deliciously aching,
Limitless limpid jets of love hot and enormous, quivering jelly of love, white-blow and delirious juice,
Bridegroom night of love working surely and softly into the prostrate dawn,
Undulating into the willing and yielding day,
Lost in the cleave of the clasping and sweet-flesh’d day.

This the nucleus—after the child is born of woman, man is born of woman,
This the bath of birth, this the merge of small and large, and the outlet again.

Be not ashamed women, your privilege encloses the rest, and is the exit of the rest,
You are the gates of the body, and you are the gates of the soul.

The female contains all qualities and tempers them,
She is in her place and moves with perfect balance,
She is all things duly veil’d, she is both passive and active,
She is to conceive daughters as well as sons, and sons as well as daughters.

As I see my soul reflected in Nature,
As I see through a mist, One with inexpressible completeness, sanity, beauty,
See the bent head and arms folded over the breast, the Female I see.

6
The male is not less the soul nor more, he too is in his place,
He too is all qualities, he is action and power,
The flush of the known universe is in him,
Scorn becomes him well, and appetite and defiance become him well,
The wildest largest passions, bliss that is utmost, sorrow that is utmost become him well, pride is for him,
The full-spread pride of man is calming and excellent to the soul,
Knowledge becomes him, he likes it always, he brings every thing to the test of himself,
Whatever the survey, whatever the sea and the sail he strikes soundings at last only here,
(Where else does he strike soundings except here?)

The man’s body is sacred and the woman’s body is sacred,
No matter who it is, it is sacred—is it the meanest one in the laborers’ gang?
Is it one of the dull-faced immigrants just landed on the wharf?
Each belongs here or anywhere just as much as the well-off, just as much as you,
Each has his or her place in the procession.

(All is a procession,
The universe is a procession with measured and perfect motion.)

Do you know so much yourself that you call the meanest ignorant?
Do you suppose you have a right to a good sight, and he or she has no right to a sight?
Do you think matter has cohered together from its diffuse float, and the soil is on the surface, and water runs and vegetation sprouts,
For you only, and not for him and her?

Iron act

You see, there are actresses, and then there is Meryl Streep. I know I'm totally bias on this topic, because well, Out of Africa and Bridges of Madison County are two of my all time favorite movies... but there's no one like her and I doubt that it will ever be. I mean... she holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations of any actor and record 25 nominations for a Golden Globe Award (seventh win for Julie & Julia in 2010, has won the most Golden Globes). And all those awards are well deserved, I believe. I don't think that, besides maybe Cate Blanchett, there is one actress that can act total anguish and desperation with such elegance as she does, turning the pain into something beautiful to be seen. I'm itching to see her master an english accent again and bring to life the Iron Lady on screen.

"I Am Not Yours"

I am not yours, not lost in you,
Not lost, although I long to be
Lost as a candle lit at noon,
Lost as a snowflake in the sea.

You love me, and I find you still
A spirit beautiful and bright,
Yet I am I, who long to be
Lost as a light is lost in light.

Oh plunge me deep in love -- put out
My senses, leave me deaf and blind,
Swept by the tempest of your love,
A taper in a rushing wind.

Yesterday

Hello! Even tough this sunset was yesterday's, I didn't had the time to share it before. Nonetheless here it is now, in a way of wishing you a very happy St. John's eve, since the Latin world will be celebrating it quite "a bit" tonight ;) I'm on my way to Geneva now, since a couple friend of mine will be marring tomorrow! If my people keep choosing to marry everywhere but near by, I'll not have to worry about travel plans ever again! ;) I wonder if some of them would like to marry, I don't know, in the Bahamas? In New Zealand? I'll start to suggest these sites to them! :)Anyway, see ya all soon!
Peace, M.

Ps: marteladas e majericos!

Poetic Education #26

A Galactic Spectacle (by NASA Goddard)

"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds...and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of...wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew.
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."

Announcements & Stuff..

Hopefully, when this post gets online I'll already be on Catalonian lands :)
So, before I go turn another year myself, I have to leave A HUGE HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my dear friend Cris who's today turning the 3-0 mark.. YAY.. or not. :)
Just remember, 10 years ago I was stressing you out so much for a birthday cake that you thought (I know) you'll not be able to put up with me, not even for one more year.. and here we are, you are still putting up with me and loving it ;)
I'll get back to the people that has been leaving asks, as soon as I return from my trip.
As life continues to get busier, and time to post new things has been lacking, here I leave for you (again), a list of blogs you may want to check out for cool stuff :)
See ya soon people,
keep safe,
M.

When You Are Old

BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

I believe in love that looks beyond, that is kind and that as it grows old, turns into a fine vintage wine and not a common beverage that ends up tasting like vinegar.

quote of the day #68

by Dan-ah Kim

Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire."

Logically...

First of, I'm not assuming here neither a pro or a con stance on this argument, I reserve my personal opinion. Nonetheless, what I do support fervently is the need of congruency and logical discerning. Second of all, I'm a huge fan of Jon Stewart, which is why I can not help myself and I had to post this:
A chat between Jon Stewart and the Republican presidential candidate, supercomputer Raygun OS 9-11.
STEWART: I assume you're pro-life, right?
RAYGUN: Affirmative.
STEWART: All right. Obama's parents were married in Hawaii on February 2, 1961.
RAYGUN: Fine. They were married in Hawaii. But that doesn't mean he was born in the United States.
STEWART: No, but he was born August 4, 1961, to be exact -- meaning his mother was three months pregnant when she got married in Hawaii.
RAYGUN: So?
STEWART: Obama was in the United States as a fetus.
RAYGUN: Irrelevant!
STEWART: Don't you see? Either Barack Obama's an American citizen or fetuses don't count as people. Are you saying that a fetus is not a human life?
RAYGUN: No! Life begins at conception!
STEWART: So Obama's an American citizen?
RAYGUN: No!
STEWART: I'm afraid logically, you've gotta choose one.
RAYGUN: No! No! Illogical! Does not compute!!!

Seriously Silly.

In order to fully comprehend the silliness of this song, you have to know that it is a parody, and that all singers involved but Akon are actors from the cast of Saturday Night Live.
So, the SNL guys do this stunt regularly on the show, but it takes amazing proportions when you put them on a stage, live and singing it as seriously as if they were singing their national anthem in a r&b-techno style.
What I adore the most about these videos, are the seriousness with which they sing about the most ludicrous topics... and furthermost they slap us in the face with the knowledge that nowadays you don't need that much to create a successful catchy song, even if the lyrics mean nothing at all, because the masses will eat up almost anything as long as it is easy on the ears. The formula is basic and is all over the mass media... take a sweet melody, add a singer who doesn't need to be that skillful and then mix it up with intervals of a rapper doing his thing, et voilá! There you have it, music for the masses!
(Don't get me wrong, I have my own guilty pleasures, but things like the song "Friday" SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED.. and I curse the people who let this be possible. Seriously. I'm scared of the type of culture my children will have to deal with in the future.)
But, whatever, enjoy the video, its intent is to make you laugh and I think it is successful at it.

Even the most destructive of things have a part of beauty.

”Drawingmachine” by Eske Rex

OUTSTANDING!

Drawingmachine is a construction involving two pendulums, each suspended from a tower construction and connected through “drawing arms” and moveable joints. A ballpoint pen resting on a drawing surface covered with paper is mounted at the point where the pendulums come together. The pendulums are set in motion by hand, and their movements are represented on the paper. The movements of the pendulums affect the entire room, and the experience engages the beholder’s body. While the rhythmic repetitions cause the beholder to pause, the drawing emerges on the paper.”

Vampires with swagger.

I've been waiting for this book since last sumer and at last it came out. Done reading the 9th book of The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series, Lover Unleashed ~ The story of Payne ~ and It was so worth the sleepless night! Is no secret I love me some Vamps and these are Fangtastic! True? True.
Even though all the books are not evenly in their level of quality, the world WARDen created as a whole is altogether very fascinating. The plot is well constructed and intricate, and there are so many specific details to it that the glossary of definitions in the beginning of each book make complete sense.
I'm confessing beforehand tough, I'm completely bias when it comes to regarding these books objectively, for verily I can not. Ha. At some point it might have looked bizarre to me that vampires listened to 2Pac and Scarface, particularly because RAP dosn't float my boat, yet the whole gansta swagger work for them and I do not care for questioning it anymore.
Not for the faint of heart nor for those underage..  I mean, this is not a blood fest in the sense that it is all about the carnage, but there's some freaky stuff going down in this stories: gut ripping, blood crying, scars, goth rituals, medieval recounts, murders, marred skin, beatings, bad mouthing, etc etc ETC and I'm sugar-coating it. And all of that interspersed with some very kinky, hum, lets call it love making at times. A lot of times. There's a lot of love to go around for everyone in these books, but just lets face it, these boys are no nancys... and I mean no disrespect, because there's even some slash lovin' too in there.
I guess, what I'm trying to say is, if you don't like vampires and a lil bit of gore, move along, these ain't for you... and lastly, I'm not even sure these books work beyond the realm of urban fantasy (read: female literature), because, yes there's a lot of butt kicking, weapon talk and spy-like scenarios but the essentials of the stories are primely female oriented.
But I digress, about Unleashed, I loved it, because it took us back to the excellent plot creating of the beginning of the series and to the values and guidelines that made this characters special to begin with. Of course that the tiding up of some stories and the prep for the next ones didn't hurt either.
All in all, I'm a happy reader after been done with the book and I can hardly wait for the 10th book or the outtakes she usually publishes between novels.
*All colloquialisms were used purposely.

Aaaaand.. just because I can, from the 3rd book: “I was dead until you found me, though I breathed. I was sightless, though I could see. And then you came… and I was awakened.” - Zsadist.

quote of the day #68

Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again. And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are? We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything. Yes, you are a marvel. And when you grow up, can you then harm another who is, like you, a marvel? You must work, we must all work, to make the world worthy of its children.
  ~Pablo Picasso.
